Abstract

1307252 Laying pipe-lines BROWN & ROOT Inc 10 March 1970 [9 April 1969] 18319/72 Divided out of 1307251 Heading F2P A method of laying a pipe-line on a submerged surface from a vessel including vessel propulsion means, comprises supporting a pipe-line from the vessel so that an upper portion is supported from the vessel and a generally submerged portion extends downwardly to the surface, imparting yieldable tension to the upper portion of the pipe-line to balance the thrust of the vessel propulsion means so that the vessel remains substantially stationary, reducing the level of tension imparted to the upper portion of the pipe-line substantially independent of the force exerted on the vessel by the propulsion means, the reduction in tension being operable to permit the vessel to move forward and so to cause feeding of a segment of the pipe-line from the upper portion towards the submerged portion and increasing the level of tension imparted to the upper portion so as to once again balance the thrust of the propulsion means and so prevent feeding of further segments. The upper portion may also be positively gripped by clamping means periodically and alternatively with the tensioning so that pipe-line segments may be added and a level of tension is maintained which will accommodate deviations in tensions resulting from environmental forces without deviating from a predetermined tension range. The upper portion of the pipe-line is supported from the laying vessel by a stringer and the yieldable tension is applied by an hydraulically operated torque wheel type tensioner, Fig. 2, consisting of upper and lower sets of wheels 23, 26, the upper set being hydraulically movable up and down relative to the lower set. The two sets are driven independently from separate hydraulic motors by suitable chain drives. The motors are such as to permit back turning thereof whilst still imparting tension to the pipe-line. The clamping means, Fig. 6, consists of three articulated segments 39a, 39b, 39c supported by frame members (37), 38 on rail means 44 on the vessel. Clamping on to the pipe is effected by means of threaded rod 41 engaging screwed blocks attached to the lower clamp segments 39b, 39c, the rod 41 being operated by hydraulic or electric motor 42. The clamping unit is connected to suitable load cells to indicate the tension being imparted to the pipe-line by the vessel through the clamping device. The method of laying has particular application in conjunction with that in Specification 1,307,251.
