Abstract

A grate for contacting vapours and liqs. to effect mass transfer reactions comprises first and second sets of spaced parallel strips, the strips, the strips of one set being orthogonally arranged with respect to those of the other set with all strips of the second set being inclined in the same sense. Some of the strips are apertured. Used esp. in distillation and absorption columns. All available surfaces are uniformly wetted and the entire cross-section is exposed to gas flow so that no stagnation occurs. Mass transfer is maximised in spite of the low pressure drop. The apertures promote turbulence and cross flow.
