Abstract
Flexible thermoplastic tubing is reinforced with a helically wound metal wire sheathed in a compatible thermoplastic so that by passing an electric current through the wire the sheath can be heated sufficiently to weld the tubing to the sheath. Used for mfr. of flexible PVC, polyethylene or coated fabric ducting for air conditioning systems etc. The supporting wire may be located inside or outside single-walled tubing or between the walls of double-walled tubing. The tubing may be made from tubular or helically wound overlapping film or from heat shrinkable film assembled concentrically with the reinforcing coils and heat shrunk to obtain close contact prior to welding. Dry assembly is more convenient than application of adhesive coatings for bonding reinforcement to the tubing, more secure than use of spot welding. Electrical heating energies and cycles are readily controlled.
