Abstract

A deep hole boring tool for use on lathes consists of a long slender body (1) in ductile steel with a hardened disposable cutting tip (2) at one end, and a mounting plate (8) at the other. The tool is smaller in cross section towards the tip, and also has a concave surface on one side (13) and convex surface on the other side. The radius of curvature of the inner surface (13) is greater than that of the outer surface, the centres of curvature being separate. The difference in radii is smaller than the distance between the two centres. The edges of the tool are also curved, the whole effect allowing the tool to penetrate the workpiece (4).
