Abstract

The apparatus is used clinically to rehabilitate the breathing of a patient. A face mask (2) is worn and the air/oxygen mixture inhaled (3) and then exhaled (4, 4a) into a volumetric meter (5). The movements of the diaphragm (operate the wheels (6a, 7a) of a totalising counter (6) and rotate (7) a perforated disc (8, 9). Light (10) shining through the perforations falls on a photoelectric cell (11), the impulses generated, representing the volume breahted out, pass (12) into an electronic counter (14) and a display unit (16). A second display (17) shows a standard to be achieved, a comparator (18) giving indication (19) if this is done. A time delay (20) prevents false or intermittent readings.
