Abstract
A compressor (18) transports air of virtually ambient pressure in beds (10, 11) having a zeolite adsorbent. When the air passes preliminary purification stages (12, 13) of the adsorbent beds, water vapour and similar impurities are separated out therefrom. The zeolite adsorbent in the beds (10, 11) also preferentially adsorbs nitrogen from the air. An oxygen-enriched gas is taken off from the beds (10, 11) by a vacuum pump (22). A plurality of beds (10, 11) are preferably operated cyclically to each other. As a result it is possible for that in one bed (10) nitrogen is adsorbed, while the other bed (11) is regenerated. If required, the regeneration process can be supported by some of the oxygen-rich product air from the adsorbing bed (10) being passed via lines (27, 28) to the bed to be regenerated.
