Abstract

The steering shaft (10,11) has two clutches (12,13) which each respond in one turning direction only. The couplings are indentical and each consits of a flange plate (16) with a cylindrical wall fixed to the steering shaft. EAch cylindrical wall has a recess to accommodate the end of a torsion member (23). Each flange plate (16) and torsion member (21) is surrounded by a free rotating unit (24) provided with an external toothed ring (25), in constant mesh with a continuously running electric motor. The torsioning springs (30) have inwards turning edges to engage in the recess spaces each side of the torsion member. Rotating the input side of the steering shaft in one direction tightens the srping (30) so that the electric motor torque is transfered to the output side (11) of the steering shaft.
