Abstract
New organo-Li cpds. (I) have formula ArHx-yLiy(NR1R2)2, where ArHx is a divalent aromatic radical contg. >=2 phenyl gps. opt. sepd. by alkylene gps.; R1 and R2 are alkyl gps. pref. lower alkyl; y = 1 or 2; x is is not 8; the N atoms are not attached to the same phenyl gp.; and the Li atoms are in the o-position w.r.t. the N atoms. A claimed polymerisation catalyst consists of a mixt. of cpds. of formula (I). (I) are less sensitive to O2 and water than n-butyl lithium, but are equally active (co)polymerisation catalysts. (I) are stable, pale yellow powders, which can be stored at 25 degrees C. under an inert atmos. for any length of time, or can be stored in a solvent, pref. a satd. alkane, e.g. hexane. (I) are not inflammable in air. The presence of 2 C-Li bonds leads to polymers of structure A-B-A or B-A-B, where A and B are vinyl or conjugated diene units, in only 2 polymerisation steps.
