Abstract

Non-invasive current measuring pliers comprise an opening transformer having mirror symmetric C shaped halves (17). Each half comprises a laminated core (17) and coil (18). The requisite degree of contact between the halves in use is obtained by a floating mounting in conforming housings (16). The halves are pivotally mounted on a longitudinal axis (21) by means of a securing ring (19), and on a transverse axis by means of lugs (23) slidably mounted on pins (25) secured inside housings (16), lugs (23) having sufficient clearance to permit pivoting on axis (21). A spring (14) biases the pliers to the closed position while springs (24) bias the transformer halves towards each other in the transverse direction. Terminals (30) are connected in use to an ameter. The transformer is clipped around a conductor (37) by squeezing handles (15) against the bias of spring (14) thereby opening the transformer halves. Current induced in the transformer is measured on the ameter to indicate current flow in the conductor.
