Abstract

A diaryl sulphone, contg. a nitro gp. in the 2 and/or 4 posns., is prepd. by reacting a halobenzene, substd. by a nitro gp. in 2 and/or 4 posns., with an aryl sulphinic acid or one of its salts, in an aq. medium in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (I). Pref. (I) is a quat. salt of formula (R1R2R3R4)M circled positive X circled negative (where M is a Gp. V element; X is an anion; and R1-4 are organic radicals). The cpds. are intermediate for dyestuffs. They are reduced to amino cpds., which are diazotised and coupled to form azo dyes. The process enables an aq. medium to be used.
