Abstract

The sail for a sailing boat has each batten permanently located inside pockets within the sail and each will consist of an airtight container designed to fill the space within the sail batten slot when inflated. The battens may take up any required shape and may be located anywhere in the sail. The battens may be inflated almost instantaneously from a source of compressed air and the stiffness of the battens may be varied according to the conditions, as required. The battens may alternatively be inflated from a hand pump.
