Abstract
In the automatic balancing of the temps. of a large no. of heat exchange units with reversible flow which are arranged inpparallel to each other, each exchanger has a feed stream and >=1 heat transfer medium stream, these streams being interchanged at set time intervals. The temp. of the particular unit is measured as the feed stream and heat transfer medium are switched over; the mean temp. of the limit is measured over the previous time interval, which should be constant, is calcd. a mean temp. for all the limits based on the mean temp. of the individual units is then calcd; the deviation and the direction of deviation or a particular exchanger is then calcd. by comparing its mean temp with the overall mean; a correction is then applied to its flow control valve to balance its temp. w.r.t. the overall temp. of the system. Esp. for use in the sepn. of air into its components. Reversible flows are used to prevent the build up of solid H2O and CO2 on the surfaces of exchangers used as feed precoolers for the first dist. column, the crude gas streams and a recycle stream being used as coolants. The process avoids poor column control and off spec. prod.
