Abstract
1470335 Heat exchangers RALPH M PARSONS CO 19 April 1974 [23 April 1973] 40375/76 Divided out of 1470334 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger in which one gas flows through a casing 12 in heat exchange with another gas flowing through a plurality of heat exchange conduits 30 (e.g. tubes or spaced plates) extending through said casing, means (shown as baffles 42) are provided to maintain a stagnant or quiescent zone 44 of relatively hot gas adjacent the point of entry of the cooler of the two gas streams into the heat exchanger. The stagnant zone 44 of relatively hot gas maintains the heat exchange surfaces above the dew point of the gases to inhibit corrosion. In Fig. 1 the cooler gas flows over the conduits 30 and is thereby heated. The stagnant zone 44 of this gas is however sufficiently heated by the heating gas passing out of the conduits 30 to maintain the heat exchange surfaces above the dew point of the gases. In Fig. 2, the cooler gas flows through the conduits 30 and is thereby heated, the stagnant zone 44 being supplied via the duct 48 from the hot gas inlet 24. As shown in Fig. 2, heat insulating material 20 may encase the heat exchanger. The apparatus is particularly intended for use in a process for the manufacture of sulphuric acid or oleum as described e.g. in Specification 1,470,334 wherein the gas which is to be heated, enters the heat exchanger through a conduit 10 itself heated by coils 14.
