Abstract

Sintered hard metal alloy of iron-contg. boride has a structure mostly of iron boride or an iron-contg. boride, where the iron boride is dispersed through an iron-contg. boride or multiple boride, and a metallic phse, predominantly of an element such as Co, Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, W, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta or alloy predominantly of one of these elements, pref. 5-15%. The iron or iron-contg. boride is mixed with a boride-forming metal or alloy powder of higher m. pt. than iron boride, pressed and sintered in vacuum or protective atmos. Alloy is harder than high speed steel and cheaper than sintered carbide for tools.
