Abstract

Typewriter has a ribbon divided along its length into regions of different colour or other characteristics, e.g. suitable for stencil cutting or type cleaning. The regions are separated by stops (100) which work the reverse mechanism of the ribbon drive (50, 52) when the ribbon reaches the end of a particular region. Different regions are selectable by respective switches (240, 260) which act on a control (60, 62) of the ribbon drive to move the selected region into the operative position (32) at the typing gate (32). The regions may be separated by lengths of the ribbon made of a material which does not absorb or transfer ink.
