Abstract
Superficial thermochemical treatment of metallic pieces is effected by ionic bombardment, the pieces being arranged in a sealed metallic chamber contg. a reactive atmosphere of predetermined compsn. and pressure, and at a cathodic potential of predetermined value w.r.t. the vessel, the process being effected in two consecutive steps, heating the pierces and then treatment, the heating being effected under a pressure considerably lower than that in the second step, and under an electric tension considerably greater than that in the second step. The process, the apparatus, the reactor, the current input lead and the generator for the process are all independently claimed. A system can be set up in which the probability of sparking is suppressed to a lower level than in prior art while a higher energetic yield is obtd. while ensuring thermal conditions favourable to the stability of the discharge. The metal pieces treated can be quenched without contact with air immediately after treatment.
