Abstract

The plasma welding and coating process uses a D.C. arc between a non-consumable anode and the workpiece, where the anode tip has a high m.pt. and the ratio of the current to the jet bore dia. is 50-100 A/mm and the arc is in electrical contact with the anode tip. For welding, the current: jet bore dia. ratio is pref. 60-100 A/mm and for coating 50-70 A/mm. An inert gas is pref. used for the plasma while inert or active gases can be used to protect the work. The pref. device is a burner with a tungsten tipped electrode connected to the positive pole of a D.C. source, the work being connected to the negative pole. Used for welding thick plates, e.g. 20-25 mm, using I-joints, in Al alloys, also I-joints in stainless steel, or the deposition of Cu or stainless steel.
