Abstract

The spring damper particularly suitable for isolating the crew quarters in ships both from engine vibrations and from larger disturbances due to ship motion has a steel suspension spring (3) with between it and the suspended mass, a high frequency absorbent resilient pad (10). The hydraulic shock absorber (4) is installed with a predetermined amount of lost motion (a). As a result, small amplitude, high frequency vibrations are not transmitted either through the spring or shock absorber but larger displacements at lower frequencies bring the shock absorber into play. The spring (3) is covered by an elastomer, such as neoprene, to absorb frequencies in the audivle range. The essential lost motion may simply be arranged by play in the mechanical connections to the shock absorber or by inserting resilient bushes at the various pivot points.
