Abstract

The cork granulate is encased in a hardened shell of sand and cement to form pebbles, the shell being used to bond the pebbles with a binder for the prodn. of all the thermal- and sound insulating components required in a building, or to make any other component. The coated pebbles are made from expanded or non-expanded cork which is mixed in the dry state with cement and sand after which water is added slowly to obtain a non-sticky coating over all the granulate, after which the pebbles are dried with periodic stirring. The pref. mixt. contains 10 pts. cork. 3 1/2 pts. cement, 2 1/2 pts. water are added. The binder for the pebbles can be mortar, gypsum, or synthetic resins. The cork granulate is used for the mfr. of lightweight bricks, panels, dividing walls, cast concrete, and concrete slabs pre-fabricated in a press. As the light granulate is in pebble form it can be used in components of practically any shape.
