Abstract
Glass is wetted in a tank with a fusion and refining zone and a homogenisation zone in the middle of which currents of molten glass form, both in the surface region where the currents flow forwardly aay from the hottest area and in the the deeper parts of the bath converging towards this hotter zone. The veins of glass in the central regions of the surface are caused to return and join with the deeper veins of glass by vertical barriers depending from the roof while the veins of another glass at the sides of the tank are allowed to pass unimpeded. The glass in surface return region is mixed to cause it to rejoin the lower levels. The quality of the glass produced is improved since the side currents are somewhat cooler than the centre currents of glass on the surface.
