Abstract

The interior of containers, e.g. tanks and reservoirs made of sheet iron, are coated with a compsn. contg. a hardenable resin, by (1) sanding the inner wall of the container, opt. after cleaning and degreasing, through to the metal surface, the wall being heated to above ambient temp. (2) milling raised areas and projections of the inner wall and filling cavities and recesses to a minimum radius of curvature which ensures a durable bonding of the coating layer to be applied, (3) coating the treated surface with compsn. contg. a polyester or epoxy resin, a hardening agent and low moisture absorption glass fibres, the surface being kept at a few degrees above ambient condensn. temp., (4) applying pressure over the coating to eliminate all voids and cavities in the coating or between the wall and the coating, so that the metal surface is generally easily visible over the entire inner wall through the coating, (5) during coating, keeping the container at R.H. 80% and at >10 degrees C higher than ambient temp., (6) coating to a thickness >=3 mm and them allowing the layer to harden, with controlled heating and (7) opt. applying an additional layer contg. only the polyester or epoxy resin and hardening as above. Method is particularly for protecting (underground) oil tanks against corrosion or renovating containers which have been wholly or partly damaged by rust in some parts.
