Abstract

The mechanism is for use with a winch having pairs of jaws alternately gripping the rope as it is hauled in or paid out, and has a linkage which rocks on an axis at right angles to the rope, which passes along the winch centre line. One end at least of the linkage is connected to a lever whose rocking end is offset to one side, allowing it to move in a plane parallel to the lengthwise centre line of the housing. The distance of the plane from the centre line is equal at the most to a quarter of the distance between the housing ends. The linkage is so designed as to avoid bending the rope as it passes through the winch.
