Abstract

Solid particles are septd. from a liq., in which they are suspended, the particles being denser than the liq. consists of charging the suspension to the centre of a space already filled with liq. and preventing the mass of liq. from being displaced radially, so that the particles are decanted vertically. A superficial layer of liq. is displaced horizontally so that each unit of vol. of this layer follows a spiral path from the centre to the periphery where it is discharged. The solid particles are discharged from the bottom of the space. The appts. for carrying out the process consists of a vessel with a central feed, bottom discharge, and a number of vertical coaxial partitions forming anular compartments. Each partition has an indentation in its upper edge and the indentations in two adjacent partitions are diametrically opposite to one another. The vessel may be cylindrical with a conical bottom, or conical. Alternatively, there may be a spiral partition and there may be radial partitions in the spiral path so formed, and the heights of the partitions may be adjustable. The sepn. is made over a very small surfae, compared with existing decantation systems, which use several units, of very large surface, and rakes. The appts. is therefore cheaper to construct and occupies less space than existing appts.
