Abstract

A submarine employs a depth control system consisting of a cable (6) which is wound onto a drum (3) housed in a compartment (2) located at the centre of gravity of the vessel, with a drive motor (5) for the drum housed in a sealed compartment alongside, and with a weighted extension (7) at the end of the cable, which is dragged along the sea bed. This weighted extension may consist of a set of lead weights suitably attached and protected. The cable may be guided onto the drum by a pulley arrangement inside the drum compartment, with e.g. a pair of pulleys mounted on a bracket with a horizontal arm extending over the drum and a vertical arm which swings about a vertical axis.
