Abstract

The roller (3) mounted on the winch drum (1) comprises a V-section channel (4) of which the two surfaces have grooves (6) extend obliquely relative to the respective radii of the roller, the grooves in one surface extending in the opposite direction to those in the other surface. The angle between the two surfaces is 30-45 deg., while the angle between the grooves and radii is pref. 40-50 deg. The width of the grooves increases in the outward direction, the ratio of min.-to-max. width being 0.3-0.7. Between the roller and drum is a rotatable retaining ring (8) extended radially or laterally by a lug (10) for guiding the cable, and beneath the lug is a brake shoe (12) which holds the ring against the roller when the free end of the cable is not under tension.
