Abstract

The arrangement comprises a reservoir filled with pressurised nitrogen, with an incendiary release device actuated by external electrical leads (3a). The reservoir is connected by a conduit (5), including a safety valve (6), to a union block (10) at one end of a rigid cylindrical envelope (8), within which is plastics container (7) holding a charge of liquid potash used as an electrolyte for the batteries. The pressurised gas forces this through an outlet duct (14) into the battery cells, which have electrodes of silver or zinc. A return circuit (19) delivers surplus material to the reservoir and acts as an atmospheric exhaust for the gases. The arrangement is relevant to torpedo batteries.
