Abstract

Alloy carbides are formed in iron contg. material by heating the material so that it is in either a ferritic or austenitic phase and subjecting the material to a carbon contg. atmos. for even formation of the carbides. The atmos. may be obtd. in a furnace or from a fluidized bed for carbon contg. particles or a molten salt bath contg. carbonaceous materials. The heat treatment may be part of the final hardening and tempering of the material and may be controlled to form carbides throughout the material or upon its surfaces. Used for forming carbides in steels contg. Cr, Mo, W or V. This use is claimed and the carbides are pref. finely dispersed and of sec. nature. The formed objects may be saws or razor baldes. Easier working of a base material, low in carbon, is obtd. into which carbon may later be introduced in to form finely divided carbides as the solubility of C in ferrite and austenite is very low.
