Abstract

Removal and recovery of org. substances from aq. effluents from cellulose prodn. plants by adsorption on water-insoluble polymers, pref. cross-linked polymers, is improved by contacting a part of the effluents (fraction A), having a low content of inorg. ions (such as sulphate and chloride), with an org. anion exchange resin to remove org. acids or anions and adsorbable org. non-electrolyte matter; and contacting another part of the effluents (fraction B), pref. having a relatively high chloride conetnt (e.g. effluents from the chlorination of ClO2 - bleaching plants), with a resin adsorbing org. cpds. such as lignim, but not Cl-. The anion exchange resin (used for purification of fraction A) is regenerated with an active alkali-contg. soln. (pref. NaOH), which is previously or (pref.) subsequently used for desorption of the org. cpds. from the resin used for purification of fraction (B). Higher degree of purification is achieved cf. known methods, and the cost is lower. The adsorbed org. substances can be subsequently utilized, e.g. as a fuel.
