Abstract
In engine cooling systems which use a combined expansion tank and water reservoir, there is a danger that when the engine stops the water in the engine becomes overheated causing steam to form. This steam drives water back to the expansion tank, raising the pressure so that the spring loaded cap is opened and water is ejected from the cooling system. To overcome this fault a non-return valve (19) is fitted in the pipe (16) between the inlet to the water pump (4) and the expansion tank (13). Thus the unwanted return flow of water due to steam formation is prevented but water from the expansion tank (13) can "top-up" the cooling system as required.
