Abstract

Microbiologically-degradable non-ionic surfactants which are liq. at room temps. and which do not gel in aqs. soln. are of formula (I): RO-(CH2-CH(R')-O)x-(CH2-CH2O)y-H (where R is n- 6-10C alkyl, R' is n- 1-6C alkyl, x is 1-6 and y is 4-15). (I) gives no gel formation even at high concns Pref. R is, on ave., 8C, R' is methyl, x is 2-4 and y is 5-12. (I) are prepd. by addn. of an alkylene oxide to a mixt. of n-alcohols (esp. a mixt. contg. 20-22% 6C, 36-39 8C and 35-38 10C alcohols) in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide) at 140-200 degrees C (cf, e.g. US 2677700, col. 6).
