Abstract

Bellows have been employed to seal at ghigh pressures and high temperatures where radial and axial deformations are possible. They have the disadvantages of high cost, fragile construction and failure by rupture due to fatigue. The device described is robust but light (advantageous in aircraft engines) and consists of a composite sealing ring trapped between the annular joint faces and a coupling element such that when installed in the desired postion 'pre-load' is introduced at the seal. This assures a perfectly leakproof joint at low as well as high pressures and when the joint is deformed.
