Abstract

1275855 Temperature-responsive actuating elements BEHR-THOMSON DEHNSTOFFREGLER G m b H 29 Sept 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 46255/70 Heading G1D An expanding fluid type temperature-responsive actuating element having a piston 4 with a conical end 5 movable in a rigid housing 1 comprises a resilient sealing sleeve 3 or 17 having a radial flange 9 which is compressed against a shoulder 11 in the housing 1 by the flange 7 of a cupped closure member 6, the annular rim 8 of the closure member engaging in an annular groove 10 in the flange 9 of the sleeve. The periphery of the flange 9 is initially rectangular in radial cross-section, but is compressed as shown at 24 in Fig.4. Annular grooves 23 in the sleeve 3 form a labyrinth seal with the piston 3, and a sealing washer 16 is located between the outer end of the sleeve and the closure member. The sleeve may have an inner end as shown in Fig. 2, with an annular groove 18 to assist the expanding fluid 2 to compress the sleeve against the piston. Alternatively, Fig. 1 (not shown), the sleeve has a closed inner end to completely separate the piston from the fluid 2. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the sleeve (21) is axially compressed between the closure member (6) and an annular flange (19) on the piston to provide a return force on the piston.
