Abstract
A mixt. of hexagonal boron nitride and a catalyst is exposed to a press. of min. 35,000 atmos. at a temp. over 1000 degrees C. The catalyst contains a silicon-aluminium mixt., viz. Si-Al; Si with Al alloys; Si plus aluminium nitride and/or Si plus aluminium boride. The pref. conditions are 45,000 atmos. min. used at a min. of 1500 degrees C., with a catalyst:hexagonal Bn ratio of 1:3. The advantage of this process is the high yield as some BN is formed even at 1000 degrees C. when using 35,000 atmos.
