Abstract

The indicator is in the form of an illuminated sign, especially for road direction signs. It includes a linear array of optical fibres (4) of length between 0.5 and 1 metre, with a diameter of 5 mm at the exit end and 1 mm at the entry, of circular or hexagonal cross-section. Illumination is provided by a fluorescent tube (12) situated at the focus of a parabolic reflector (20), and partially screened by a rotary mask (14) with a hole pattern (18) to permit light to fall on a selected group of fibres. The exit ends of the optical fibres are connected to a display panel designed to produce the signal required.
