Abstract

Hydrogen rich gases are made by (A) producing a hydrocarbon air mixt., (B) igniting the mixt. to form hot combustion gases, (C) injecting water into the gas mixt. (D) mixing hydrocarbon fuel with the gas/steam mixt. and (E) reacting to cause steam-cracking of the fuel. The product gas is pref. cooled by heat exchange with the air used in (A). Invention is used in petrol or diesel engines, jet engines, gas turbines, etc. (e.g. automobile). Any hydrocarbon fuel, e.g. petrol, jet fuel, diesel oil, may be used and pollution caused by usual combustion is reduced. Equipment is compact, durable and safe, and operates immediately on starting. Energy required for the steam cracking is provided by partial combustion of fuel, without complicated equipment, heat exchangers, etc.
