Abstract

A clearance, to prevent seizing, is created between rotor and stator. It takes into consideration differential and proportional expansion so that the rotor rotating in bearings never touches the stator's inner walls. The clearance when the engine is cold is calculated by a simple mathematical formula. It equals the chosen value at running temperatures plus the radial expansion undergone by the rotor less the radial expansion of the stator. These values may be previously calculated as a function of the materials and their working temperatures, these parameters being calculated or derived experimentally.
