Abstract

In continuously removing a quantity of a liquid or suspension from a closed system at a given pressure into another system at a different pressure the two systems are interconnected by a cylinder closed at its downstream end by a plug; after the liquid has entered the cylinder from the source system, a piston is introduced at that end and advanced through the cylinder, the plug at the other end being simultaneously removed to permit the liquid to flow into the second system. When transference is complete, the plug is replaced, the piston is withdrawn and the operation can be repeated. This procedure may be combined with simultaneous enrichment of the suspension or liquid; for this purpose, the wall of the cylinder is formed as a filter, the piston is advanced for a certain distance to expel liquid through this filter before the closure plug is opened; after this, the procedure is carried out as before. No direct communication between the systems, or equalisation of pressures, is necessary. No overflow or wastage of material takes place. The mechanics of the system are extremely simple.
