Abstract

A linear gap in a partition between two spaces is sealed by a flexible joint in two parts, each of 'L'-section with its base bonded to the partition on one side of the gap, the two 'L'-section lips backing against each other as they extend at right angles to the partition. The two lips seal, e.g. by elastic snap action, when pressed together, and access through the joint is via a sliding chamber fitted with an internal, sliding glasp fastener at each end so that, as the chamber slides along the joint, the lips are open inside the chamber but sealed both in front of and behind the chamber. The device is used as an acess point on the seal of a controlled atmosphere or vacuum chamber for handling e.g. toxic, corrosive or radioactive materials or protective substances which are degradable in normal atmospheres.
