Abstract

A measure of the optical transmissivity of the atmosphere is found be sending a beam of light from a chopped source 1 via a mirror 3 over an accurately known long atmospheric path; another mirror 4 reflects the light to a detector 2 whose output is A. Simultaneously the same light source is directed via mirror 6 onto an identical detector 5 placed in a clear region of the mirror 3, its output is B, and contains a measure of the ambient light when the light source is off, and with the bulb on the output B contains a measure of the source brightness. Electronic processing results in a signal consisting solely of the ambient light, and a digital signal of the transmissivity. A digital-to-analogue converter can change the digital signal into continuous form if needed.
