Abstract

An automatic butt welding rig for submerged arc welding of vertical pipes used in offshore gas and oil wells uses a welding head carriage on which the electrode can be angularly adjusted relatively to a plane at right angles to the pipe sections and relatively to the pipe section radii. Another adjustment acts radially to the pipe sections and a vertical adjustment sets up the electrode axially to the pipe sections. This produces welded seams of extremely high accuracy and quality. The deposition rate can be as high as 9 kg. of weld metal per hr. with a single welding head. The system can be used for V-seams of 30 degrees, 45 degrees or 90 degrees included angle.
