Abstract

A tubular bobbin in which yarn is wound to form a package for dyeing has pref. longitudinally extending regions of deformation (e.g. radially inwardly extending grooves in the outer surface of the bobbin or radially outwardly extending ribs on the outer surface of the bobbin) whereby the bobbin is radially deformable, and the bobbin has lines of perforation extending pref. between adjacent regions of deformation. A stabilising sleeve is located on each end of the bobbin and each stabilising sleeve has an axially extending flexible skirt which locates around the bobbin and a rigid radially extending portion which locates on the end of the bobbin. Pref. the stabilising sleeves are of a thermoplastic material which undergoes a predetermined deformation at the dyeing temp. The stabilising sleeves ensure that the end portions of the bobbin deform in the same way as the median portion of the bobbin on which the package is formed thereby ensuring uniform yarn tension and uniform dyeing.
