Abstract

Protective coatings are formed on components, esp. sintered tungsten carbide cutting tools, by (a) placing in an isothermal chamber the component to be coated, a titanium donor, which is a solid body at the reaction temp., and consists of an alloy of 15-50 wt.% Ti and Ni, Cr, Co and/or Fe, and an alkali metal fluoride or chloride which is solid at the moment of its introduction into the cold reactor, (b) introducing into the chamber >=1 gas selected from inert gases, hydrocarbons, ammonia and/or nitrogen, and (c) heating the chamber to 800-1150 degress C while sweeping continuously with the gas.
