Abstract

Title carbon fibres have a surface layer of graphite oxide with a thickness of 0.1-0.4 mu. The layer of graphitic oxide contains 3-15 wt.% oxygenated functions, based on total wt. of fibres. The oxide layer is formed on carbon fibres which have been subjected to thermal treatment at >1000 degrees C and possess a modulus of elasticity of >=15,000 hectobars. The fibres are produced by (a) immersing carbon fibres in a reagent bath capable of forming a layer of a graphite salt on the fibres; (b) simultaneously or subsequently converting the salt layer into an oxide layer (c) washing the fibres with water, and (d) drying. The fibres are treated in (1) a bath contg. KClO3 for 4-24 hrs. at 25 degrees C, (2) a bath contg. KMnO4 for 5-15 mins at 35-40 degrees C, or (3) a nitric acid bath contg. an oxidising salt.
