Abstract

In tyre carcasses featuring concave sidewalls loaded in compression and having relatively thin cross section hinge zones between each sidewall and the adjacent tread zone and beaded and offering a stable rolling configuration if collapsed, as in parent patent, such zone of the inner and outer surfaces of the sidewall as may contact other parts of the tyre or the wheel when the tyre is collapsed are covered with grooves normal to the principal anticipated axes of slip. Pref. the inner face of the sidewall features radial grooves opposite the surfaces of a pressure plate used to retain the tyre head in place on the wheel rim. Pref. the outer face of the sidewall is divided by intersecting pattern of radial and annular grooves. The grooves are pref. 0.3-20 mm deep and at intervals of 0.3-4 X their depth so that the ratio of groove vol. to residual rubber is 0.02-1. The groove patterns reduce the risk of circumferential or transverse slippage when rolling in the collapsed state, thus increasing vehicle stability and safety.
