Abstract
Water is cooled by flow, first through finned tubes, and then in a direct contact cooler; the air streams from the indirect and direct coolers are combined before venting, to reduce the saturation of the vapour, and avoid pluming, even under adverse conditions. May be applied to both forced and natural draught cooling towers, with forced draught pref. the finned tubes are vertical, and water exits from their open bottom ends which remain immersed, thus exerting a syphon effect to aid pumping, with natural draught, water makes a double pass through finned tubes. Air flow through direct and indirect coolers may be separately controlled to vary air mixing ratio according to ambient humidity and temp the indirect cooling tubes, surround the base of the cooling tower, above the air inlet to the direct cooling provision inside the tower.
