Abstract

Cooling tower in which atmos. air is carried by natural draught through a direct heat exchange zone, comprising demister and distribution packing, where cooling air directly contacts the hot water to be cooled. This heat exchange zone is non sub-divided into a no. of 'wet' cooling sections and between each adjacent pair is inserted a 'dry' cooling section which comprises a fan to draw cooling air through an indirect heat exchanger, e.g. shell and tube, which delivers warmed air and cooled water without direct contact between gas and liq. For towers of circular, horizontal, cross-section, each 'wet' and each 'dry' heat exchange section pref. occupies a sector of the circle. For large towers, e.g. of 100m. dia each 'dry' zone usually employs several fans each with a diffuser outlet. The towers are used for power stations; industry etc. When weather conditions might give rise to excessive cloud and mist formation on receiving the exhaust of a 'wet' type tower, the 'dry' section fans are brought into use to mix warm dry air into the tower exhaust. The advancement of a completly 'dry' type of tower arc obtd. without its considerable cost.
