In the mfr. of carbon black by pyrolysis of a hydrocarbon feedstock in a pre-combustion reactor by the known technique of introducing the feedstock and a hot combustion gas, produced by burning a fuel with an oxygen-contg. gas, into the pre-combustion zone of the reactor to form a reaction mixt. the feedstock being introduced axially into the reactor upstream of a Venturi nozzle installed in the reaction zone and the reaction mixt. flowing through the venturi, to form carbon black, the hydrocarbon feedstock is introduced into the reactor at a posn. corresponding to a L/D ratio of 0.29-1.25, where (L) is the distance from the location of the feedstock inlet to the inlet of the Venturi and (D) is the dia. of the Venturi-throat.
