Abstract
A primer for a solid-propellant rocket has a detonating fuse to ignite a primary charge, which in turn ignites a priming charge. The characteristic firing delay is 43 milliseconds less than with known electrically-fired primers, but detonation does not occur. There may be a flexible plastics, cylinder having an axial bore and cylindrical cavities distributed regularly round the bore for the priming charge. Radial perforations connect the bore to the exterior of the cylinder. In the bore is the primary charge ignitable by a detonating fuse. The priming charge comprises alumino-thermic pellets. The primer charge may be a pyrotechnic composition not liable to detonate or to take up a stable detonating regime selected from powders based on Mg-Fe2O3-KClO4 thermites, and Zr-BaCrO4-NH4ClO4-(NH)2Cr2O7.
