Abstract

Acrylonitrile-impregnated porous C or graphite is irradiated with gamma-rays of 105-109 Rad dosage and heated to >=200 degrees C, esp. 200-400 degrees C, to pyrolyse the polyacrylonitrile formed. Structural materials for chemical processes, esp. involving corrosive gases or liquids and/or high temps. (1) No need for catalyst; (2) reduced porosity of product; (3) increased compressive strength, e.g. by 38% while modulus rises by 4%; (4) increased resistance to chemicals.
