Abstract

Skis having a flat U girder skeleton are assembled by bending, cutting and welding metal strips, depositing a hard, wear resistant alloy along the edges, and filling the core with hollow elements providing longitudinal damping in a crosslinked resin matrix. Pref. the metal frame is slotted to improve matrix anchorage, and pref. the corners are coated with an abrasion-resistant metal alloy or epoxy matrix filled with steel filaments or strands. Pref. the underside of the ski is faced with a layer of PTFE, pref. incorporating a fine mesh of metal (bronze or Ni) reinforcement. Pref. the core incorporates metal trapezoidal section bridges or layers of thin wall metal or plastic tubes supported on lightweight metal or polyester bound glass fibre decks and bound by an epoxy or polyurethane resin matrix, the binder matrix being expanded and/or incorporating thin wall glass or metallic hollow spherical fillers, or cellulosic fibres. Accessory inserts are also welded/moulded in as desired. Esp. for mfg. competition skis for high speed or cross country use. Design allows fabrication of varying lengths and balance of skis using simple tools to obtain a structure with a high degree of damping of flexural or torsional movements and a high strength/wt. ratio.
